Toby Keith is well known for his drinking and party songs that are light and fun. However, he released a song that is full of jealousy and resentment in 1994.
On July 19, 1994, Keith released “Who’s That Man” as his first single from the album, Boomtown, his second studio album. Written by Keith himself, the song is about returning to his former house that he lived in with his ex-wife and children. However, he soon witnesses the life he has missed, saying “That’s my house and that’s my car, that’s my dog in my backyard”.
He soon realizes that the family is happy and drives off as he does not want to make a scene. At this point, he is jealous with the lyric “who’s that man running my life”. The narrator of the song does not mention the events that lead to him getting divorced.
The music video, seen above, premiered on CMT on July 21, 1994, just two days after the song hit airwaves. It is the first music video we saw Toby Keith wearing a cowboy hat.
The song made its way onto the charts with its debut at #74. It was on the charts for 20 weeks and peaking at the top of the chart on October 8, 1994, in both Canada and the US. It held the top position for one week, earning Keith his second number one hit.
